Artist Statement
On Holliday is a tale of the everyday holiday feeling of the Gold Coast. Warm sun, naps on the sand, surf checks, and a morning coffee from The Holliday in hand.
Painted in acrylic on canvas, 76 x 91 cm, the work is built around restraint and focus. I pulled back harder than I ever have in both composition and colour, leaving space for the viewer to arrive slowly.
A broad, sand toned field of negative space holds a single vignette of beach life. A swimmer or surfer with their things left on a towel, a mum and child gathering snacks and building sandcastles, someone savouring coffee, someone napping with a book. Long shadows fix the scene to 8am, holding the quiet energy of a day just beginning.
From a distance the piece reads as calm, minimal and contemporary. Up close it shifts into micro realism, finely observed detail at an unexpected scale, rewarding the viewer who leans in. The yellow umbrellas carry The Holliday’s unmistakable palette, a subtle marker of place and a signature note repeated through the work.
On Holliday is built around a balance I’m always chasing, open space paired with an intimate story that asks you to come closer. The longer you look, the more there is to notice, a slow reward of tiny human moments held inside all that quiet. At its heart, the work celebrates small rituals and shared stillness, and the simple fact that here, even an ordinary morning can feel like a holiday.
