Artist Statement
Wave Street is the view you get when you walk down Wave Street (the same street my favourite café, The Holliday, is on) and the coastline opens up in front of you. The Miami Hill runs into Burleigh Headland, which then fades all the way down towards Coolangatta.
It’s “mid-morning” on the Gold Coast, which really means about 8am. Coffees are in hand, the sun is already warm and the day is already moving.
I kept the palette simple. Sand, cream and beige with little hits of yellow inspired from the Holliday umbrellas.
The closer you get to the piece, the more the small details come to life and you are immersed in a little world. A woman under a yellow umbrella absorbed in her book with her Holliday coffee beside her, two seagulls hanging around her feet. At the waterline, two surfers pausing mid-conversation before heading out, while another comes in from the surf in the distance. Together, this captures a wonderfully Gold Coast overlap of people who’ve been up for hours and people just starting their day.
I studied hundreds of real moments from this exact spot to get that feeling right and learnt it’s all about locals doing their thing, close enough to share the space, yet far enough to keep it quiet.
